Goth fashion

It is intense. It is strong. It is dark. And we love it. This is goth style, and we are going to talk about it here. Some of you may not know what goth fashion is about, but do not worry about it, because we are here to explain it to you: fashion is a way to express yourself, and this one is not going to be less.

The 70s were the beginnings of gothic style, even if the first appearance was throughout the Middle Ages. At that time, punk and goth style were not that different: black clothes, metal accessories, leather inserts... But with some time, goths got individual characteristics that made them unique. Death, vampires and pain are very related concepts, as well as Victorian style and vintage.

Goth style has been leaking into fashion shows and red carpets, being an important part of 2000s trends. Alexander McQueen was the first worldwide famous designer in integrating goth elements in his designs... and they were exquisite. How does it get to the 2020s? What kind of goth outfits will fit you the best? Well, that is why we are here for. We are going to get you through a goth fashion trip. Are you ready?

Goth style characteristics

  • Dark colours as lifestyle. It is not the only one, but this style is based on black and dark colours like purple, even if you add some red, white or blue to it.
  • You can be in the past or in the future. It is versatile, as you can go for the Victorian one with corsets, feathers and laces, or for the futuristic one, with thick soles shoes, masks and protecting glasses. If you feel inspired, you can mix both.

  • Romantic and unique. For most goth people, this style is not just some cloths, is a way of self-expression. That is why it is very common to see handmade items that makes your outfits completely exclusives.
  • Strong and revolutionary. Not everything is depression and death. Gothic is also a symbol of rebellion, decadency and destruction. It is hard, lurid and dark.
  • Artistic. Open-minded, creative and artistic people are attracted to this style: artists, musicians, painters, designers, actors... That is the reason why it is perceived as eccentric, excessive and theatrical.
  • Death and darkness is a part of the deal. Vampires are an important figure in this culture, as the picture of erotic and ghoulish. Aristocratic types of garments are very elegant and usual, inspired by Dracula and mourning.

Key garments and basics

  • Corsets. The main element in female goths. It is elegant, sexy and fits the style perfectly. You can find them in different shapes, colours, with laces and ties, simple, flamboyant... It is onto you to choose!

2

  • Shirts. For women, for men... it does not matter. There are a huge variety of shirts that will level your outfit up.

2

  • Skirts. Depending on your style, you have a broad range of skirts at your disposition. Black ballet skirts, Victorian layers skirts, leather... How do you feel today?
  • Dresses. Those amazing Victorian dresses... We dream about them. They are so special. They have that vintage and antique look that will make you feel like a few hundreds years old vampire. Just classic.
  • Leather pants and leggings. What a goth would be without some leather, right? They are sassy, sexy, strong. They give you this extrovert look. We love it.
  • Jewellery. Gold is not our thing, but those silver and black bracelets, chokers, rings, earrings... The crosses, skulls, bats... They are just delightful.

4

  • Tights and high socks. Made of a lot of fabrics like cotton, silk, with ties, simple... Make your choice!

Outfits inspiration

Good, so we already know what we need to start to combine different garments or to keep going with our style. Now, where do we get our inspiration?

There are several famous people with gothic style, like Marilyn Manson, Taylor Momsen or Helena Bonhan Carter. Let's see it!

Marilyn Manson usually combines black and another colour like blue, white or red. We can see him with black suits as a base combined with white, black or red shirts, sometimes with silver jewellery and chains. He has a modern goth style, where the business elegance is the priority.

Taylor Momsen, the lead singer of the hard rock band The Pretty Reckless, has a different goth style: she bets for leather. Jackets, skirts, shirts, boots... Black is the main component, weirdly matching red or white. Her makeup is usually a white face (although she is quite pale, so she does not always wear base), black smoky eyes and nude or blood-red lips, according to the classic goth type.

Helena Bonhan Carter pleads for a modern Victorian gothic style, not always wearing black. We can see her in beautiful grey and red dresses, purple, blue... Laces are her thing, especially in dresses. Her makeup is usually light. Thanks to her natural pale skin, she does not need much make up, so she focuses in her lips: red or nude... Red is for sure her colour, and dresses fit her wonderfully. So gorgeous!

In the end, this is the magic of our style: we are unique, we can choose what clothes fit us, and we are free to combine all the elements that we love. It does not matter if you love Victorian dresses with leather corsets and boots, everything is part of our dark charm.

As we can see, we are everywhere, even in fashion shows like the Marc Jacobs collection in 2016, the Cabaret Syndrome line by Jac the Rimmel or Alexander McQueen for Givenchy Couture. It is easy to form a distinctive touch, as you can mix everything you like. You can be an Addams, a Dracula or even a Batman, as long as you feel comfortable and amazing.

What kind of goth clothes would you try? I bet any garment you choose would be awesome. Can you imagine yourself in a cool gothic windbreaker, walking down the street? We can not wait to see it!
