Fantasy World In The Snow: Winter Cosplay Idea Inventory

When the weather turns colder, some prefer to cozy up indoors with a blanket and a cup of tea—while others know this time of year is ripe for adventures and taking in the world with a fresh (if somewhat brisk) perspective! Of course, the world of cosplay is included in this—and we firmly believe there is no "right" or "wrong" time of year to gather friends to play. In fact, winter months can provide unique appeal to your cosplaying efforts, offering dreamy backdrops and peaceful vibes. We've put together a list of role recommendations to get you started thinking about winter cosplay opportunities—so you can get to playing as soon as possible!

Winter Theme Role Recommendations

Cold weather can be a shock to the system—but it can also be a reminder to embrace the nature of change and step into a new season (literally)! In fact, there is never a better time of year to cosplay winter-themed realms than in the colder months—and as Jon Snow knows, winter is coming!

1. Elsa and Anna, ("Frozen II"): Tap into your imagination and playfulness by donning the elegant attire of these two princesses of Arendelle! Whether you opt for Elsa's confident approach to tackling the magical problems of her kingdom or Anna's supportive and stylish look, you're sure to let go of whatever you need to this cold weather season!

2. Snow Witch, ("Elden Ring"): If you love all things gaming and fantasy, then you likely enjoy the widely celebrated game of the "Elden Ring," which is known for its magical and miraculous realm and enigmatic character of the Snow Witch. With these flowing robes and indulgent fur coat and her signature hat, you will not only have fun out in the cold, but stay warm and cozy while doing so!

3. Jon Snow, ("Game of Thrones," Season 8): Feeling like taking a different approach to cosplay, and preparing to fight the White Walkers? Take on the weighty mantle of Jon Snow with this hefty fur cloak and armor set!

Even if you don't choose a character on this list of our favorite cold-weather heroes, remember to be safe when you head out to play and wear an appropriate number of layers. If you really want to step into your role, consider bringing the kinds of libations your character eats—you'll need the fuel if you're dedicated to your play!

(We'd like to add that if you're stumped when it comes to characters with warming clothing, consider looking for outfits which, at the very least, offer complete coverage of limbs. Ideally, your character would have a cape, cloak, hat, scarf, or some other warming accessory—so be creative and have fun with it!)

Seasons Define Cosplay Roles

Though some people can understandably feel as though the colder months of the year might stall or even entirely prevent your cosplay endeavors, this couldn't be further from the truth! In fact, the snow-dusted landscape can inspire you to take on roles you might not have considered otherwise (and of course, the same can be said for summer, spring, and autumn). Let's look at three of our top picks this season!

1. The Homelander, ("The Boys," Season 4): Want to tap into your "super" side with "The Boys?" This ice and snow inspired ensemble for The Homelander offers long sleeve protection, a warming cape, and and eye-catching and imagination-sparking look.

2. Alva Lorenz (Hermit Warden) and Prisoner Luca Balsa, ("Identity V"): Whether you identify more as a "survivor" or a "hunter" in the world of "Identity V," both of these characters offer an opportunity to step into this apocalyptic realm—either in the regal robes of Alva Lorenz or the nature-inspired costume for Prisoner Luca Balsa.

3. Link Blizzard, ("The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom"): Though "Breath of the Wild" often gets a lot of love, "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" is one for the books as well. Step into your adventurous side with this regal ensemble fit for Link!

4. Texas, ("Arknights"): Step into the post-apocalyptic world of "Arknights," in which the characters must fight a contagious degenerative disease known as "oripathy" in the lore—and see if you've got what it takes to find a cure while dressed as one of the game's most noteworthy characters!

Winter Cosplay: Capturing Creativity With Scenic Backdrops

Whenever possible, it's always a good idea to lean on the free resources nature provides—particularly when it comes to selecting a location for your next cosplay endeavor! For example, if you live in a mountainous region, perhaps you are blessed with snow this time of year. Can you think of a better setting for characters like Jon Snow or "Frozen's" Elsa to come to life? Other ideas to consider include forests or local parks where you can step into the inspiring set of the outdoors. Whoever you choose to play and wherever you choose to gather, remind your friends to dress according to their role—but warmly, too—and maybe bring a thermos of warm tea or hot chocolate to enjoy after!

Though there are benefits to roleplaying and cosplay within city limits, you may find that taking a step outside changes the experience for you in new and exciting ways. And who knows, the park, forest, or mountain you pick may change dramatically as the weather warms up, inviting new opportunities for play with a whole new array of characters.

While there can be challenges associated with organizing and embodying characters in the act of cosplay, the weather need not be one of them. With so many fantasy worlds taking place inside cold or apocalyptic settings, when nature reflects this back to us it becomes even more effortless to simply step into the role! You might even end up feeling so inspired by your surroundings, your play takes a life of its own. So, when the temperatures start to drop, don't think the party's over—have fun scoping out potential locations and putting together your look! And remember to stay safe, keep warm, and look out for your fellow cosplayers.
